Educated Personal Training Clients Get Better Results

Educated clients get better results.

When you think about why people really hire coaches, trainers or a therapist it’s because they believe that person can help them achieve a goal or solve a problem that they can’t on their own.

In rehabilitation, patient education leads to better health outcomes, supported by solid evidence. The same principle applies to personal training—educated clients tend to fare better. The same is true with training. Educated athletes or clients — whatever you want to call them — get better results.

Deep down, we all know that achieving our goals is going to require more than a couple hours of work in the gym for a couple of weeks. It’s going to require hundreds of hours and a lifestyle that supports the results we are looking for. We also know that working with a trainer indefinitley isn’t realistic. That’s why, at Eastside Athletics, we lead with education.

Here’s an example of what that might look like:

Imagine a client, let’s call him Peter, who wants to lose weight and improve his overall fitness level. He has made attempts as weight loss in the past without success, so he enlists the help of a personal trainer.

Peter’s trainer takes him through a solid workout, but he also teaches him about the principles of strength training (things like supersets, drop-sets, tempo, accomodating resistance), cardiovascular exercise, and proper form throughout his session. They discuss the benefits of resistance training for building lean muscle mass, improving metabolic health, and changing body composition. Peter’s trainer teaches him how to log his workouts, noting the weights used for each set of a given exercise to ensure progression over time. Peter gains a deeper understanding of how different exercises target specific muscle groups and how to follow a well-rounded training program specific to his needs and preferences.

Additionally, Peter’s trianer educates him on the importance of rest, recovery, and stress management to achieve optimal results. They discuss the significance of sleep quality, stress reduction techniques, and the role of mindset in overcoming obstacles and staying motivated along the journey.

By empowering Peter with knowledge and skills, his trainer empowers him to make decisions and take ownership of her health and fitness journey. As a result, Peter not only achieves his initial weight loss goals but also develops sustainable habits that support his long-term well-being.

This example illustrates how education forms the cornerstone of effective personal training. When clients understand the rationale behind their actions and the science behind their goals, they are more likely to stay committed, make healthier choices, and ultimately, achieve better results.

At Eastside Athletics, we believe that educated clients not only see better results but also cultivate lasting habits for lifelong success. Through personalized training sessions grounded in knowledge and understanding, we empower individuals like Peter to not only reach their goals but to surpass them, one informed decision at a time.
