This will be a short post — but a meaningful one.
When choosing a personal trainer, it’s essential to find someone who not only has the right qualifications but also embodies the principles of training and nutrition in their own life. In my opinion, applying these principles to oneself as a trainer is infinitely more valuable than any certification you can take.
A great trainer practices what they preach.

It is easier to coach someone through a movement that you’ve spent time figuring out for yourself. It’s easier to talk someone through training frustrations or setbacks when you have faced them yourself. As a trainer, I can’t expect you to show up for your workouts when you’re busy or unmotivated if I don’t do the same. It’s about leading by example. If I don’t hold myself to the same standards I set for you, my credibility crumbles.
You could have a PhD in Exercise Physiology, but if you’ve never picked up a barbell or transformed your own body composition, your advice might fall flat. The theoretical knowledge is valuable, but without the backing of real-world application, it lacks depth and relatability. A trainer who practices what they preach will possess a trove of practical wisdom that no textbook can provide. It’s the blend of scientific understanding and personal experience that truly elevates a coach.
I’m not saying formal education isn’t valuable. It absolutely is. Understanding the science behind training and nutrition is crucial. What I am saying is that people often overlook the importance of personal application.
At Eastside Athletics, our trainers practcie what they preach. They continue to train themselves. They model a healthy lifestyle and pursue continuous self-improvement because it’s integral to their integrity as a coach. We can’t demand dedication, resilience, and consistency from you if we don’t embody those qualities ouserlves. It’s about setting the standard, walking the talk, and inspiring through action.
In the end, our commitment to our fitness journey isn’t just about us. It’s about being the coaches you deserve—ones who understand the struggle, celebrate the victories, and share the journey with you every step of the way. When you choose a trainer, look for someone who lives the lifestyle they promote. At Eastside Athletics, we believe that a trainer who embodies these principles can inspire and guide you more effectively, making your fitness journey not just a goal, but a shared experience.
